It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a smoothie recipe! This isn’t because I don’t have them often, in fact I think it’s just the opposite. I have banana based smoothies just about every morning, but they rarely ever change when it comes to ingredients: bananas, water, dates, and a pinch of cinnamon—yum! However, sometimes I get in the mood for something specific and I happen to have the ingredients on hand that will make my taste buds happy!

This happened to be the case this morning. I had been awake for about an hour. The dogs were walked, the exercise was done, and the shower was taken. I didn’t want bananas and dates, yet I had a lot of ripe bananas on hand because our friend at the farmer’s market gave us an incredible deal on them. I also happened to have a bunch of oranges that needed to be juiced, and when I remembered this it hit me… Why not make a knock-off of my old favorite, the Orange Julius?

If you’ve never had one, I remember the original orange flavor tasting like a delightful orange creamsicle. Now granted, this was about 20 years ago now (Boy am I getting old!!!) but that’s how I remember it! I headed over to the Orange Julius website to see what the drink was made of and boy oh boy is it scary. Yeah, it includes orange juice… and “Orange Julius sweetener”… and a flavor enhancer. Here are the ingredients for that enhancer:

Modified Whey Solids, Maltodextrin, Egg White Solids, Sugar, Karaya Gum, Natural & Artificial Flavors, Corn Syrup Solids, Guar Gum, Modified Food Starch, Dipotassium Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Standardized with Dextrose.

Um… no thanks! I don’t need egg white solids, artificial flavors, or any of that other junk in my orange drink. It didn’t take long for me to come up with my own EASY version. I think you’ll like it because I sure did! Try it soon:

A Simple Orange Julius Knock-Off (Vegan of Course!)

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

1-2 servings

A sweet drink that will get your day started right!

  • 3 bananas
  • Fresh juice of 3 oranges
  • The inside of ½ a vanilla bean-OR- 1 or 2 tsps vanilla extract
  • 1 cup ice cubes

Simply put everything in your blender and blend baby, blend!

Keep things moving until the concoction is smooth, but don’t expect it to get tooo creamy.

Orange Julius drinks aren’t supposed to be too creamy. 🙂
